Steeped in culture and tradition it's roots come from ancient battlefields, but today has grown to be a popular combat sport around the world. The "art of eight limbs" uses punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and standing grappling. 8× world champion Chip "the Surgeon" Moraza-Pollard is the owner and head trainer of Surgeon Muay Thai. A lifelong martial artist and Plymouth resident, kru* (teacher) Chip competed in mma (mixed martial arts) before transitioning to muay thai to become a professional nak muay* (muay thai fighter). Chip is ranked as one of the top cruiserweights in the world by the WBC. He became the first ever Lion Fight cruiserweight world champ in 2017, and successfully defended the belt 7 times while also becoming the first American to win a Muay Thai Grand Prix world title in London. Chip has a passion for sharing the culture, skills, and love of muay thai with others with clear, patient, and detailed instruction.

1. What are the benefits of training in Muay Thai?
Muay Thai training can improve your physical fitness, strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, and balance. It can also boost your mental focus, discipline, confidence, and self-defense skills.
2. Is Muay Thai only for fighters or can anyone train in it?
Muay Thai is for anyone who wants to learn a martial art and improve their fitness or self-defense skills. You don't have to be a fighter to train in Muay Thai.
3. What equipment do I need for Muay Thai training?
You will mainly need boxing gloves and shin guards for most classes at SMT. Mouth guards and groin protection are also recommended for more advanced sparring classes.
4. What should I expect in a Muay Thai class?
Our muay Thai classes typically involve a warm-up, skill drills, bag work, pad work, technical sparring, and clinching. You will learn the basic techniques and movements of Muay Thai and gradually progress to more advanced levels.
5. Is sparring required in Muay Thai training?
Sparring is a key component of muay thai training. Our students first learn proper technique, and then learn how to apply that technique with light contact, flow sparring. Eventually members can join the more advanced students and fighters in higher paced rounds.
6. How often should I train in Muay Thai?
As often as possible! The more time and effort you invest, the more you'll get out of your training. It's generally recommended to train in Muay Thai at least 2-3 times per week to see progress and improve your skills. However, the frequency of training depends on your personal goals and schedule.
7. Can Muay Thai training be dangerous?
Like any martial art or combat sport, Muay Thai training can be dangerous if proper safety measures are not taken. It is important to train with a qualified instructor, wear protective equipment, and follow the rules and guidelines of the gym.
8. Can I compete in Muay Thai fights?
Getting into the ring to compete in Muay Thai fights is a great goal to shoot for. By doing so you learn a lot about yourself and it's the ultimate test of the skills you've been building in class. It takes time and effort but once your skills have reached a high enough level competition is definitely an option.
9. Is Muay Thai training suitable for children?
Muay Thai training is definitely suitable for children! It's a great way for the kids to have fun while getting a workout, learning to defend themselves, and building confidence. That being said it does require focus, discipline, and the willingness to work hard and listen to instruction.
